A nurse at King’s College Hospital in Denmark Hill has been shortlisted for an award for her work with older people who have had a fall and are frail.
Kate O’Donoghue’s job is to look after elderly patients who have had falls, and make sure they are ready to be let out of hospital. She also helps prevent elderly people even having to come into hospital by working with carers to get them the right support at home.
Kate pioneered the role, which is part of the emergency department, and now King’s has three frailty nurse practitioners.

She was nominated for the nursing older people prize by the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) in their annual awards, which have fourteen categories in total.
Kate said: “It’s an honour to be recognised by the RCN and selected as a finalist for this award. Identifying frailty in our patients early on is crucial, and allows myself and fellow colleagues to put in place timely and preventative measures to support people to age well.”
The winner will be announced on October 6.
