Three hundred and fifty primary school children have taken part in Southwark’s ‘Summer of Athletics’ with top athletes, writes Katherine Johnston…
Inspired by the World Athletics Championships held in the capital this year, Southwark Athletics Club decided to hold its own special event for children. The day-long “Summer of Athletics” brought together children from seven local primary schools, including Albion Primary School and St Joseph’s Catholic Junior School.
The children learned turbo javelin, high jump, and took part in relay races. Nigerian long jumper, Ezekiel Ewulo and British long jumper, JJ Jegede, made special appearances on the day to give the pupils some expert coaching.
James Tierney, Community Development Manager at Everyone Active said: ‘It was fantastic to see so many children show such enthusiasm towards athletics and having fun with their friends. “Here at Everyone Active we’re passionate about helping to inspire the next generation of athletes. We hope that the event can be the start of many more to come. ”
