Twenty-five swimmers at The Castle Leisure Centre in Elephant and Castle, Camberwell Leisure Centre, Dulwich Leisure Centre and Seven Islands Leisure Centre in Rotherhithe raised £6,244 in total.

The money will go to charities Cancer Research and Marie Curie.

According to the charities, over the past 31 years more than 700,000 people have taken to the pool and swum 400m, 1.5k, 2.5k or 5k distances, individually or as part of a team, raising a total of over 49 million.

A total of over two million has been raised so far this year.

Everyone Active Contract Manager Mark Basker said: “All the swimmers who took to the water were inspiring to watch.

“I would like to congratulate everyone who trained so hard beforehand to complete their challenge. They should be very proud of their achievements and in raising an incredible amount of money for two wonderful and important charities. I would also like to say a big thank you to all members of our local community who donated.”
