A month-long Walworth Festival last held in the 1980s is being resurrected  in June.

The festival revival project, coordinated by the Walworth Society, will see a street based festival taking place on a different street on each of the four Saturdays in June.

There will be a different theme each week, each of which will be selected to highlight the cultural diversity of the Walworth area.

The Walworth Festival was a regular fixture in the local calendar up until the early 1980s. The 2017 reincarnation is backed by Southwark Council’s High Street Challenge Round 5 fund.

“There’ll be four street based festivals on the roads off Walworth Road, animated with various local cultures, music, dance, drama, performers, history, foods, craft stalls, kids activities and even an outside deck chair cinema,” said Walworth Festival project manager, John Whelan.

It’s hoped that the festival series will create an opportunity for local businesses to network and promote their products and services, as well as to put Walworth on the map.

“We really want to put Walworth and Southwark on the map as a destination to have fun and enjoy your leisure time,” said John.

The Walworth Society are hopeful that this year’s events will be a springboard for the return of an annual Walworth Festival

Space will be provided for free to anyone who wants to sell products on a stall. Applications from entertainers and performers are also welcome, as are ideas for what should be included in the festival.
