Construction has begun on an expansion of the Evelina Children’s Hospital, due to open in 2022.
A new five-storey building will increase capacity for surgeries, with two new operating theatres and specialist diagnostic services.
Trust bosses say the building is needed to meet increasing demand for the children’s hospital services.
Inpatient numbers have doubled since 2005, and outpatients have more than doubled.
“Over the past 10 years, the number of children and young people needing our world-class services has grown substantially,” said the hospital’s director Marian Ridley.
“We now care for more than 95,000 families a year and the number of patients in our care continues to rise.”
The new centre will be next door to the current hospital building. It is part of the wider planned expansion of the hospital.
Outpatients will be relocated to a building on Royal Street, while the hospital also plans an extension to its main building.
“Our exciting plans to expand our children’s hospital will mean we can provide outstanding healthcare for even more children and young people who need us, meeting their needs now and in the future,” added Ms Ridley.
