Cricket in the north of the borough received a boost last weekend with the launch of the All Stars children’s cricket programme in Southwark Park.
The Mayor of Southwark, Barrie Hargrove, who opened the programme, at the historic Oval, welcomed the opportunity for children to learn and play the national summer sport and follow in the footsteps of Surrey and England legend Bobby Abel, for whom Southwark Park was his home ground.
The Mayor (above) also thanked Southwark Park Cricket Club for bringing cricket back to Southwark Park.
SPCC is continuing to build a community club that is open and welcoming to everyone. As well as running programmes for primary aged children, this year SPCC is offering free coaching for teenagers on Friday evenings and free coaching for women on Saturday mornings.
Having raised the money for the cricket nets installed in 2019, the club is now lobbying the council to improve the cricket pitch so the Park can host competitive league matches.
SPCC chair Martin Kovacs said: “As well as bringing cricket back to the north of the borough, we are creating something unique – a full cricket club structure open to all, based in a public park.”
SPCC is a community cricket club run by and for local people with the aim of bringing cricket back to the historic Southwark Park Oval.
